Music runs through the heart of Brazil; in its carnival spirit; its vibrant mix of cultures; its clubs, streets and homes.
Ushering in a new wave of Brazilian music while honouring its history, Elza Soares has been a defining presence in Brazilian music since the 50s. Her husky voice took her from the favela to the clubs to being declared the best singer of the millennium by the BBC in 2000. Despite a difficult life, Soares has used her platform to give a voice to people on the margins of society.
On her latest album Soares has worked with musicians from the underground scene of Rio de Janeiro to produce a set of apocalyptic, ‘dirty’ Samba songs, continuing to break new ground musically and confront the reality of 21st century Brazil.
